12-08 APA Event – CHESAPEAKE -The Aerial Photography of Cameron Davidson

CHESAPEAKE
The Aerial Photography of Cameron Davidson
Nearly 10,000 years ago, rising sea levels filled a meteor-impact crater to form the Chesapeake Bay, North America’s largest estuary, and the third largest in the world. The long tendrils of its watershed cover 64,000 square miles and span six states from Virginia to New York.
Cameron Davidson has been shooting aerial photography of the Chesapeake over a period of twenty years. The view from this privileged vantage point reveals man’s impact on the land and the water. It yields an abstract beauty that is seldom seen, from the seven bends of the Shenandoah River to the important marshlands and islands of the watershed.
Davidson’s stunning full-color photography is arranged geographically and accompanied by the words of David Fahrenthold, who has written extensively about the Chesapeake Bay and other environmental topics for the Washington Post.
He has been featured in PDN Online and was part of the Kojo Nnamdi Show.

_________

Iphoneography, or more broadly mobile phone photography, is a genre that has exploded in the last several years due, in part, to higher megapixel sensors, creative apps to process the images, and the highly portable nature of the devices themselves. These advancements have led to a style of picture-making that is both immediate and intimate. Every aspect of our lives, from the banal to the exceptional, are captured and digitally published in a manner that reflects our own individual aesthetic sensibilities and preconceptions of the world. Mobile photography is like a personal diary written in our own unique handwriting.

The show also demonstrates the ability of the smart phone to capture images at a quality that allows for gallery display. With resolution levels of new cameras hovering around 8 megapixels and higher quality lenses prints capturing more detail, enlargements of 16×20 and higher are attainable. The intangible is now tactile, the pixels, ink.

We hope to see you there!
